Good news?

At the risk of counting chickens, online employment matchmakers Elance have surveyed more than 3,000 freelancing professionals and highlighted a welcome bright spot in this apparently never-ending global economic gloom.

It seems freelancers’ earnings, particularly for those working online and in content-led roles, are up and are expected to rise again next year.

That, obviously, goes against what we currently know as the big picture.  That being a big, dark picture painted by glass-is-half-empty economists and hand-wringing opposition politicians.

Granted, it’s difficult to view it as any real indication of a turnaround – it could just be that freelancers are more in demand now because full-time employees are considered an expensive hassle when times are tough.

But any upturn in freelancers’ fortunes, literal or otherwise, should be cause for celebration shouldn’t it? And if it is a sign of good times ahead, well, that’s something to celebrate too.

Have a look at the comprehensive survey here and let us know if you feel the same.

Heads up: it looks like the freelancers surveyed are American but that shouldn’t make a great deal of difference. As we all know, when America sneezes, Britain gets a cold …
